On Friday night, August 21, the Cotulla Cowgirls and Cowboys Cross Country teams traveled to San Antonio to compete in the San Antonio Friday Night Lights Invitational at the Alamo City Youth Sports Complex.

The JV boys opened the night with a two-mile race. Competing in a large field of 402 runners, the Cowboys held their own and delivered strong individual performances. Although they did not have the five runners needed to record a team score, each athlete represented Cotulla well.

The Cowgirls followed with a strong performance in the varsity girls’ two-mile race. The team was led by sophomore Jazlynn Olivas, who continues to get stronger each week. Dayanna, Chloe, Destiny, and Jackeline followed with gritty performances in a competitive field of 190 runners.

The Cowgirls finished 16th out of 27 teams, placing ahead of district opponents Devine, Natalia, and Hondo. These girls are on a mission to shake up the district, and the coaching staff could not be prouder of their effort and determination.

The varsity boys closed out the night in the 5K against a talented field of 199 runners. Junior Emmanuel Lopez once again led the Cowboys, continuing to set the tone through his leadership and consistency. Jarek, Saul, Jose, and Nelson followed with strong efforts of their own.

The Cowboys finished 21st out of 27 teams, placing ahead of district opponents Hondo and Devine.
