On Friday, August 28, the Cotulla High School cross-country teams traveled to Eagle Pass to compete in the Eagle Pass ISD Cross Country Invitational. The Cowboys and Cowgirls delivered outstanding performances across the board, with both varsity teams capturing first place in the Class 4A-and-under divisions.

The varsity girls opened the meet with a dominant showing led by Jazlynn Olivas, Dayanna Conchas, and Destiny Garcia, who swept the top three individual places. Teammates Chloe Garcia, Jacklyn Alba, and Destiny Freeman followed with strong performances to help the Cowgirls secure the team championship with an impressive 29 points.

Jazlynn Olivas (10th) — 13:17.0

Dayanna Conchas (9th) — 14:04.9

Destiny Garcia (9th) — 14:08.8

Chloe Garcia (10th) — 15:24.4

The Cowgirls placed all six runners inside the top 15 and finished ahead of district opponents Crystal City and Carrizo Springs. The team continues to make tremendous strides and is determined to extend its season even further this year.

On the varsity boys’ side, the Cowboys competed in a challenging race featuring runners from all classifications, with results separated by division. Emmanuel Lopez once again led the way, running with the front pack and earning the individual championship in the Class 4A-and-under division.

Saul Avina, Jarek Gonzalez, Jose Maria Vargas, and Dominic Garcia followed with strong efforts of their own. Together, the Cowboys scored 24 points to claim the Class 4A-and-under team championship. They also finished ahead of district rivals Crystal City and Carrizo Springs.

Cotulla also received strong performances in the junior varsity divisions. Hailey Osoria represented the Cowgirls well, finishing in the middle of the pack in the JV girls’ race. On the JV boys’ side, Nelson Sanchez, Armando Garza, and Enrique Garcia each earned a top-10 finish in their division. These athletes continue to improve and move in the right direction as the season progresses.

The Cotulla cross-country program continues to build momentum at the right time. With two team championships and several standout individual performances, the Cowboys and Cowgirls are ready to shake things up in the coming weeks.

The Cotulla cross-country teams are set to race again on Saturday, September 5, at the 13th Annual Ricardo Gallegos Invitational at Juan Garcia Park in Crystal City. The rolling schedule begins at 8:30 a.m. in the following order:

Varsity/JV Girls — 2 Miles

7th/8th-Grade Girls — 2 Miles

7th/8th-Grade Boys — 2 Miles
